Rastrick Library has been closed since March 2020.
There is no date set yet for reopening, but plans are being made. The department in charge of Council buildings, CAFM, is looking into the issue of electronic entrance doors. This will need listed building consent. The cost will be considerable and it will not be possible to obtain funding until the new financial year in April. There are also a few more minor issues inside the building to be sorted out. Improved outside lighting, which will throw light forward onto the ramp, will be fitted before reopening.
A risk assessment is being undertaken, looking at a one way system and a safe way of working for staff. Perspex shields are likely to be fitted to both sides of the Library counter. A new permanent timetable could be introduced, though the initial timetable might be different, as higher staffing levels may be needed. There will be some staff changes, meaning new staff will need to be recruited, which will take some time.
Friends meetings are temporarily suspended, except that the Photography Group continues on line and the Poetry Group continues as a Zoom meeting. The local history group also keep in touch with each other. Even when the library does re-open there will be restrictions – no extensions on computer sessions, no newspapers, no groups or meetings and users encouraged to make their visits brief. So, for the time being no Friends’ meetings in the library, but we hope for better times later.

Postponement of our AGM
Because of current circumstances, Friends of Rastrick Library have no choice but to postpone the AGM, due to take place in January 2021. We will review this decision in due course, and hope to meet up later in the year, when it is safe to do so.
Wishing you all a Happy New Year and better times ahead.
